Helping a large energy trading company expand its trading function and move to a new purpose-built location

In 2009, a large energy trading company was planning to expand its trading function and move to a new purpose-built building. The company’s technical and business requirements were not ‘mainstream IT’ and there were concerns the current internal team would not be able to service the needs of the business. There was also a perceived risk in the ‘supply chain’ of the skills they required.

Approach

When Quanta was introduced to the company’s head of IS, it quickly became apparent that there were major difficulties in moving projects forward at the pace required by the business – and that internal policies on the supply of external staff were also restricting progress.

At the same time, there was an urgent need for a new IT service trading manager to be recruited – a key role in the company’s operations. Quanta conducted meetings with the client’s IT management and human resources team to understand their processes and to establish an agreement which would enable Quanta’s services to be utilised. At the time there were three external staff, all of them based in Germany; none were delivering the service required.

Process

Once the team at Quanta had gained a full understanding of the role and the working environment, Quanta used its extensive network of candidates to track down suitable applicants. The IT service trading manager’s role was virtually a ‘right arm’ to the head of IS – and a very visible role that required fluency in both German and English and the ability to work in all of the company’s offices. Quanta successfully located a candidate and placed the consultant on an assignment.

Outcome

Through this initial proof of capability Quanta was then invited to resolve further resource issues, covering the whole of the IS trading team. These included the following:

  • Endur test analysts
  • Endur business analysts
  • End-of-day Endur business analyst
  • AVS developers
  • Product and process manager for the Endur assurance programme
  • Front office developers (VBA & Java)
  • Senior Java developers
  • Trading systems developer
  • PMO analyst
  • Project managers
  • IT infrastructure manager
  • IT infrastructure analyst
  • Market data manager
  • Market data analysts
  • Dealer board project manager

Many of these roles required Quanta to ‘think outside of the box’ to achieve a successful hire. For example, AVS developers are extremely hard to source. The team at Quanta has a network of experienced AVS developers, who are based in India. So, Quanta was able to quickly arrange for suitable candidates to transfer to Europe, and for their appropriate visas to be obtained. In addition to the benefit of gaining their technical knowledge, there is also a cost-benefit to the client. More recently, Quanta has also sourced experienced Endur business analysts from countries such as the USA.
