Contractors like it the way it is, according to survey
A survey by ContractorCalculator shows that British contractors enjoy their contracting status – and don’t want the employment rights offered under the Agency Workers’ Directive.
12 April 2008 · United Kingdom
The survey, which was undertaken in February and March, showed that almost 100% of contractors want to remain working in that way and not become employees. 91% of those surveyed say that they earn more as contractors – and 75% said that they didn’t want employee rights.
“This report tells us what we already knew,” says Quanta’s managing director Stephen Trigg. “Contracting is great – it’s rewarding, enjoyable and for many better than regular employment.”
A large proportion of Quanta’s work is in placing contractors in roles around the world, for leading companies in biotechnology, biopharmaceuticals (otherwise known as biopharma), finance, information technology, manufacturing, medical devices, telecoms and utilities.
The aim of the Agency Workers’ Directive is to protect contractors with rights similar to employees – but for the most part, contractors feel they don’t need that protection and that the legislation may be harmful – imposing an unnecessary and uncompetitive cost structure on the industry.
“For the most part,” says Trigg, “contractors don’t want employees’ rights – they are happy with the way things are.”
