People at Quanta: Gemma
Gemma Stickley’s experience at Quanta is a real example of the flexible career opportunities available. With a wealth of experience in finance, working in accounts for 17 years, Gemma embarked on a new adventure as our Business Unit Support Specialist at the end of 2017. After 4 years at Quanta, she’s firmly embedded in the fabric of the business and is excited to continue growing within the company. Here’s her story:
“I’d worked in finance roles since I left school”
In Gemma’s vast finance experience she’s done everything from credit control and billing to invoicing and general accounting. When she was approached about the role of Accounts Assistant at Quanta, she wasn’t considering returning to work, having taken maternity leave after the birth of her second child. However, the role sounded too good to pass up – the office is located just 10 minutes’ walk from Gemma’s home, with flexibility around work hours and an office environment that felt immediately warm and friendly. Despite thinking she’d spend a longer period off work – and that she’d return to her previous employer – the appeal of Quanta was too much, and she hasn’t looked back.
“Before Quanta, I worked for much larger organisations”
Gemma’s previous experience within large-scale organisations saw her become accustomed to the structure of big businesses, but Quanta’s company culture and scope for growth appealed to her when it came time to return to work after maternity leave. Whilst working for a small company would be a real change, after meeting the team and learning more about Quanta she decided it would be a perfect fit.
“Quanta are very good at allowing you to identify your strengths and move into new roles”
Quanta places a strong emphasis on developing and promoting from within, and Gemma is testament to this. In October 2017 the role of Business Unit Support Specialist came up, and while it would be the first time in seven years she’d be working full-time, the opportunity proved too good to pass up. The change was significant as it was a pivot from the finance work Gemma was used to, and it allowed her to build on existing skills and develop new ones.
“My days are rarely the same as Business Unit Support Specialist”
While Gemma still works with numbers - running reports, checking time sheets and working closely with the accounts team – the Business Unit Support Specialist role has given her more variety in her daily work. She’s heavily involved in candidate care, as well as supporting business units with reporting, CV formatting, various research projects and admin support.
“The office environment is a big thing about working here”
The Quanta company culture encourages people to have fun at work, and Gemma says this is immediately apparent to anyone who comes into the office. She says the Quanta values are upheld by everyone within the company, where hard work is recognised and rewarded both on an individual level and as a company.
Quanta is well-known for its focus on ongoing training, and Gemma has taken advantage of this by training with the delivery team to better understand what they do and how she can support them.
“My biggest achievement has been moving into my new role”
When Gemma was considering whether to apply for the Business Unit Support Specialist role, she was naturally nervous about the new responsibilities. Since being promoted into this position, she says it’s been both a personal and professional achievement that has boosted her confidence and shown her how supportive the Quanta team is.
“Everyone is willing to give you their time and make sure you’re happy”
The non-hierarchical structure of the business means that everyone from line managers to directors is happy to lend a hand and help out. That level of approachability and willingness to provide guidance has helped Gemma thrive within her role and the wider business. In addition, she’s found the business very flexible and understanding in terms of childcare, allowing her to balance her family and work priorities.
