From Delivery Executive to Learning & Development Lead: Emma’s journey

Emma Fowler joined Quanta in 2016, cutting her teeth as a Delivery Executive before identifying a love of – and skill for – training and development. She’s since developed within the business in a number of different roles, and we’re now proud to announce she’s taken up the brand-new position of Learning and Development Lead. Here’s what this means for the business, and for Emma:

“Within two months as a Delivery Executive I was given more responsibility”

Starting within the life sciences team in April 2016, Emma developed her resourcing skills as a Delivery Executive (DE), building relationships with candidates and quickly identifying the right people for the right job. Within a couple of months her role changed dramatically, and she took on the management of two accounts in addition to the DE work. A year later, Emma expressed an interest in developing her people management skills. While one of the common career paths for a DE is to move into sales and business development, Emma expressed that this wasn’t a path she wanted to take, and she and Quanta’s leadership team identified she’d be a great fit for the Delivery Team Leader role. 

“Training was always something I had a strong interest in”

As Delivery Team Leader, Emma supported her team of seven, overseeing their day to day duties as well as their career development and training. This exposure made her even more interested in training and development, and after undertaking CIPD accreditation at the end of 2019 she was well equipped to take on more responsibility for Quanta’s internal training. The brand-new Learning and Development role tied in perfectly with Emma’s skillset and career ambition, and after interviewing in early 2020, she secured the position.

One of Quanta’ core values is “investment in OUR future”, and Emma’s career path – as well as her new position – typifies this. While Quanta already has award-winning training programmes, the business identified a gap in the model for employees who had been with the company for longer periods and perhaps wanted – or needed – different types of training and development. Emma is keen to ensure that every team member gets a sufficient amount of training each year, making sure everyone is invested in and can continue to develop, no matter what stage they’re at in their career.

“I’ll be focusing on the learning and development needs of the whole business”

Until now, Emma has been purely focused on the delivery side of the business. Now, she’ll be looking at Quanta has a whole, identifying training requirements for everyone from the newest starters to the most long-term, senior members of the team. She’ll run the Fast Track to DE programme, allowing Quanta’s external trainers to focus more on Fast Track to Sales and Fast Track to Future Leadership, as well as introducing more enhanced programmes. She’ll also look at the organisation of inductions, manage staff development plans for everyone in the business and work closely with Quanta’s language tutors.

When Emma first started out in recruitment she had no idea where she’d end up, and says Quanta’s support and open communication has helped her to progress to where she is now. She’s been on the receiving end of Quanta’s extensive training programmes and ‘Smart Time’ sessions, saying whenever she has approached the business with questions or requirements, she has been listened to and helped. Crucially, she has never felt pressured to move into a role or part of the business she wasn’t interested in.

“If you create the right environment, the people you train can help each other as well”
Emma says that good training isn’t just about one person dictating to others. She aims to create an environment where people enjoy themselves, can ask questions and share their experiences with others. Engagement and open communication are key, she says, and she’s looking forward to pushing Quanta’s focus on training and development even further in the future.
