Living and working in Boston

Looking for your next move in the USA? Boston could be the perfect destination. As one of the US’s biggest urban economies, Boston is a bustling, busy city steeped in history and ripe with business opportunities. Here’s why a move to the Massachusetts capital could be your best decision yet:

There are plenty of opportunities for interesting work

Boston is a world leader in the life sciences and healthcare industry, renowned for its innovation, research and development and its position in the US’s life sciences corridor. In fact, the city’s healthcare and social assistance industries account for more than 18% of total employment, with Boston home to more than 12,000 life sciences jobs in manufacturing, research and development, according to the City of Boston. And with more than 120 health IT and digital health companies situated in Boston, there are many opportunities for life sciences professionals wanting to take their next career step.

Those looking for ICT jobs will also find plenty to get excited about in Boston. High-tech employment has doubled in Boston in the past ten years, thanks in part to Google, Facebook and Salesforce all having a presence in the local market. There’s also a strong demand for colocation and wholesale data centre space, with growth being driven by corporate expansions and organic tech growth. According to a KMPG survey, the city is seen to be the “ninth likeliest city globally to become the leading technology innovation hub outside of Silicon Valley” by 2023.

Boston and Massachusetts as a whole are also taking strides in the renewable energy sector, becoming one of the USA’s first states to move forward with a regulatory programme to address climate change in 2008. In 2018, Boston was one of the winners of the Bloomberg American Cities Climate Challenge, which accelerates cities’ efforts to address climate change. The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy last year named Massachusetts the most energy efficient locale, further proving the area’s climate clout.

There’s an abundance of innovation and education

Outside of Boston’s thriving industries, there’s a huge focus on education and innovation, thanks largely to the Greater Boston area’s hub of almost 60 universities. These include Harvard University, Boston University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and contribute not only to producing some of the nation’s brightest minds, but also to providing resources and accelerators to industries within Boston.

Continue your education elsewhere with the Freedom Trail, which is an iconic 2.5 mile trail that connects nationally significant sites of history, or at one of the many major museums and libraries in the area.

There’s so much to do – and it’s easy to get around

When you’re not working in one of Boston’s forward-thinking industries, you will find plenty to do in and around the city. There’s the famous Boston Marathon, the Cambridge Science Festival, ArtWeek Boston and Boston Calling music festival to name a few, plus some of the world’s most famous sports teams to watch and support, including the Celtics, Red Socks and Bruins. Take in the atmosphere at Fenway Park, head outside the city for 125 miles of hiking at the Blue Hills Reservation or take to the waters surrounding Boston for a fresh perspective. The good news is, getting around is easy thanks to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s offering of buses and subway systems, known simply as the “T” by locals. This means you won’t need a personal car to enjoy everything Boston has to offer.
